September 5th, 2011 - California State Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg sent a letter which was also signed by the Sen. Roderick D. Wright, Chair of the Governmental Organization Committee and author of the one of the bills announcing that the bills that will lead to legalization of poker would not be voted this year. However, both of them are in support of the legalization of Internet gaming but both claim that they are not ready just now to pass the bill.
The reason for the delay as provided by the two sophisticated politicians was that the there are still a lot of issues that remain unresolved. These issues include the tribal exclusivity and waiver of sovereign immunity, the types of games that need to be authorized, who all would eligible to apply for the gaming site licenses and all the other potential federal constitutional questions.
The entire State Legislature is going into the Interim Study Recess on Sept. 9 with a view of developing the proposal. The governmental organization committee is going to hold hearing in January 2012.
It has become important for the Internet gambling to become legal the next year as it if is not made legal in California next year, the bill will have to be introduced next year all over again in 2013.
