Legal Gambling Age in the United States

There is a legal age for nearly every milestone in American culture and that means there is a legal gambling age that is set by each state. People have to be 18 before they can get married or go to war and 16 before they can drive. Individuals have to wait until they are 21 before they can legally purchase and drink alcohol. Gambling has similar age restrictions. The gambling age for individuals differs from state to state. In many parts of the United States, people can gamble once they turn 18.

In other parts of the U.S., they have to wait until they turn 21. Mainly because casinos also serve alcohol and do not want to wrongly serve alcohol to those underage. The best way to learn what the particular, legal age limit in your state is to simply ask. If you enter a casino and their age limit is not posted, talk to someone who works there, they should be able to tell you. The same holds true if you decide to become a member of an online casino. You can check the help section, or talk to someone in customer service. The age limit is usually posted on the home page of the site.

Age limits for various activities exist for a number of reasons. One of the primary ones is those that govern a particular industry believe that a certain amount of development, and maturity must exist so that an individual is less likely to cause harm to themselves or to others. You would never hand over the car keys to someone who is immature due to their age. The same holds true for letting a child gamble at a casino. They could easily be taken advantage of by more experienced players. Children would not have the maturity and good sense to bet wisely.

In most states, individuals can legally gamble when they turn 18 years old. Some states require those who want to gamble be at least 21 years old. These laws are subject to change, and so it is best to either find out what the legal age limit is of the casino you are planning to visit when you get there, or call ahead if you are too embarrassed to ask in front of other people. If you want to gamble online, make sure you understand the age limit on the site. If you are younger than 21 and older than 18, you may have to take the time and look for the age requirement on that site.

Most online casinos will allow you to gamble once you turn 18, and since most of them are based outside of the United States, they are not subject to American rules unless American players are using their site.

In some parts of our country, gambling becomes a rite of passage, much like drinking alcohol once you reach the age of 21. When some individuals turn 18, they head on over to the nearest casino and legally gamble for the first time. In most parts of the United States, the legal gambling age is indeed 18. However, as stated above, in some states, people will need to hold off for three more years until they reach the legal age of 21.
