Gambling in the United States has sparked many conversations about it in recent years. Mainly because of the ambiguity on laws governing cyberspace. The federal government has jurisdiction over the internet, but the location of the player have made state and local laws become involved in online gambling. Because of this, the responsibility of the laws which govern the internet falls solely on the federal government.

   Depending on the interpretation of preexisting laws, online gambling has always been illegal in the United States. Since its inception, there has never been federal prosecution. With the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in 2006, this put the responsibility squarely on the shoulders of the financial institutions that were being asked to transfer funds for players from their personal checking accounts into their online casinos accounts. With the passage of this new law, the transferring of funds from these types of casinos is forbidden. Players have to fund their accounts using different means, such as off shore accounts.

    With the amount of available online casinos that accept players from the United States, many players do not realize that what they are doing is illegal on some level, because of the openness of these online gambling sites. Everything seems legal, but may not be for every individual player. This can be confusing, but every player must understand the laws for their state, and make a determination to see if gambling is illegal where they live.

    Currently, players from the US are allowed to play in many online casinos around the world. Even if this changes, players will still be playing in them whether it is illegal or not. Players cannot claim ignorance if they get reprimanded for their online activities, and the best way to have a good time online is education.

With time, all states will allow online gambling for its residents. They will find ways to properly regulate it so those who want to gamble online and are old enough to so, will not worry about the interference of law enforcement. As of right now, knowing how the law applies in various circumstances is the key to avoiding embarrassment, or jail time.
