Top USA Gambling Issues for US Gamblers.

Thr, July 30th, 2009 @ 3am

Before we get into a detailed discussion about USA online gambling and the various intricacies of it, it would be prudent to have a few words about online gambling in general. Although gambling has been there since time immemorial, online gambling is a pretty recent phenomenon.

In online gambling, the rules followed are more or less the same as traditional gambling and the major difference is the process in which the gambling happens. Here the bets are placed through the Internet, and so someone can bet from anywhere on the world on any event at any time of the day.

In the US online gambling grew rapidly over the last decade of the twentieth century and continued to do so till the beginning of this decade up until the time when US government started acting against it. We will now have a thorough discussion on what is the scenario at present of gambling online in USA for US gamblers.

Some Legal Issues

In September 2006, the US Senate passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act that was introduced to the house earlier. This was much to the surprise of many and it was bigger surprise when the president actually went ahead and approved it to be made into a law. Technically online gambling was banned from the US shores from the day onwards. This law led to some of the biggest names in the online gambling business to shut shop in the US and pull out of the country. But more interestingly, some stayed and continued to do business which are still running successfully. The US government seems to have taken a go slow policy on this which has allowed the businesses to thrive and flourish. This attitude of the government coupled with the fact that many USA online gambling sites were prepared to fight against the new legislation, induced renewed courage among US gamblers who went back to the sites.

The supposed threat from the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act reduced further when a Democratic congressman, Barney Frank from Massachusetts wanted to push for a new legislation that made it the responsibility of the federal authorities to define explicitly and in all clarity what actually stood for illegal internet gambling. Once that definition is complete, it would have been easier for United States citizens to know which are the things they can do online, and which they cannot. But unfortunately this piece of legislation was not put in place and hence there is still a whole lot of confusion regarding the online gambling websites in the US. With the bill unable to make it through to being an act and subsequently a law, another group got afraid and lost interest in online gambling in USA.

The good news is that the law does not target individuals and instead cracks down on the financial institutions that make payments to the online gambling sites. So if you are a US gambler and you want to gamble on sports in the USA then you are free to do so. It is only the gambling sites that have to be careful.
